Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina (www.bbb.org) held its sixth “Secure Your ID” Day event on Saturday, October 23. More than 420 participants took part in the free community awareness event. BBB distributed information to help educate consumers on ways to further protect themselves from identity theft.

“We were pleased to see so many people stop by to shred sensitive documents and learn about identity protection,” said Beverly Baskin, president and CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina. “This was an important first step in reducing the risk of becoming a victim.”

Held at the Coastal Federal Credit Union on St. Albans Drive in Raleigh, more than 21,000 pounds of documents were shredded. Participants dropped off an array of documents that included check books, bank statements, school records, utility bills, credit card receipts and register receipts. Shredding services were provided by ProShred Security (www.proshred.com) and Cintas Document Management (www.cintas.com/DocumentManagement).

The local event was part of the second annual National Protect Your Identity Week, October 17-23, 2010. BBB and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling partnered to host events nationally to help consumers guard themselves from ID theft.

BBB hosts “Secure Your ID” Day events in the spring and fall each year. The next event will be held in April 2011. For more event information, visit www.easternnc.bbb.org/secure-your-id.
